Additional Information
This one-week Institute directly supports the work of professionals engaged in health literacy work to transform public health and healthcare delivery in the United States and across the globe. Those working to improve patient-provider communication and healthcare quality as well as those working with learners in community settings will find the Institute to be directly applicable.
Peer learning and the sharing of research and best practice are core components of the Institute's educational approach. Participants work on a curriculum or educational program of their choice resulting in a final product that is current, comprehensive, informed by research, and reflective of best practice.
Objectives
Identify health literacy as an organizational/ systems problem that includes the skills of health care professionals and consumers.Name audience-specific health literacy competencies and the curriculum content to address those competencies.Write measurable health literacy learning objectives and an evaluation plan that includes outcome and process measures.Outline a health literacy curriculum or educational program based on sound adult learning theory and effective teaching strategies.
Participants
The Institute is limited to 20 participants to allow for in-depth interaction and feedback from faculty and peers. Participants are expected to have a basic understanding of health literacy principles prior to the start of the institute. An optional pre-session immediately prior to the start of the Institute provides participants with an overview of core health literacy principles and policies and an additional opportunity for learning.
Tufts students who wish to enroll in the course for academic credit but have not yet taken HCOM509 Health Literacy must receive prior approval from the Course Director. In addition, students are required to meet with the instructor for one class session prior to the Institute and two sessions after the Institute. The pre-session provides an overview of core health literacy principles, and is optional for non-credit participants. In the sessions following the Institute, students discuss issues raised during the Institute and are provided with additional guidance related to their final project.
